Dumfriesshire MSP Craig Hoy has backed calls from Langholm residents for further action over gravel build-up in the River Esk, warning that community concerns over flooding and the need for dredging cannot simply be dismissed.
Mr Hoy recently met representatives from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and Dumfries and Galloway Council to press concerns raised by local residents about sediment and gravel deposits in the river.
During the meeting, SEPA and Council officials set out their reasons for opposing dredging as a flood prevention measure, arguing that removing gravel would not substantially reduce flood risk during major flooding events and that sediment would naturally build up again.
However, Mr Hoy said the strength of feeling within Langholm, including concerns from long-standing residents who believe gravel levels have increased significantly over time, means the issue requires further examination and engagement.
Mr Hoy has now called for SEPA and Dumfries and Galloway Council to meet local community representatives to discuss what further action can be taken.
Following the meeting, Mr Hoy said:
“Over many years Langholm residents have seen first-hand how the Esk has changed and the impact flooding can have on their community.
“I completely share the concerns of residents who look at the amount of gravel building up in the river and understandably question why more is not being done to remove it.
“SEPA and the Council have set out their arguments against dredging, but I do not believe that should simply be the end of the matter.
“Local people deserve more than being told that removing gravel will not make enough of a difference. They need confidence that every practical step to manage the river and reduce the threat of flooding is being properly explored.
“It’s particularly frustrating that gravel removal has previously been permitted, yet we have now reached a position where the route which might have allowed that work to take place is no longer available.
“I believe there is a strong case for looking again at what can practically be done to remove or better manage the build-up of gravel in the Esk. Dredging should remain very much on the table as part of those discussions.
“The Council and SEPA may have concerns about dredging, but those concerns need to be discussed directly with the people who live with the consequences of flooding.
“I have therefore asked both organisations to meet with representatives of the Langholm community, and I am willing to help bring everyone around the table.
“With the larger flood protection scheme no longer being taken forward, residents will understandably ask what is actually going to be done instead.
“I will continue to press for practical action to address the condition of the river and ensure the concerns and experience of Langholm residents are given the weight they deserve.”
