Craig Hoy MSP recently joined the Salmon Fishing Opening Ceremony on the River Nith near Auldgirth and was honoured to join the event marking the start of the salmon fishing season.
Moffat based Conservative candidate Craig Hoy was pleased to learn more about fishing on the Nith and about the ceremony itself, which involves toasting the river, speeches and a celebratory atmosphere.
Mr Hoy met with local residents who fish the river alongside members of the River Nith District Salmon Fishery Board, including Chairman Percy Weatherall.
Speaking after the event, Mr Hoy said: “It was a great honour to join local fishing enthusiasts on the banks of the Nith to celebrate the start of the salmon fishing season.
“There are significant pressures facing freshwater fish stocks, and so that is creating pressure for the river communities. I saw firsthand how much work goes into conserving and enhancing all native freshwater fish and their habitats located within the inland and coastal waters of the River Nith.”
Mr Hoy added: “Country sports are essential locally, and I will always stand up for the country sports communities in Holyrood. It is important that rural areas like Dumfriesshire have strong voices to represent them in the Scottish Parliament.”
