Local MSP and Conservative candidate Craig Hoy joined fellow MSP Oliver Mundell on a visit to one of the Queen of the South football team’s breakfast clubs in Dumfries to learn more about the services they offer and the positive impact it has on the local community.
Mr Hoy was pleased to learn that, at the North West Community Campus in Dumfries, 20 children get a healthy breakfast every day before school thanks to the club’s scheme, which is supported by Cash for Kids.
Mr Hoy met with Dan Armstrong, Commercial Manager at Queen of the South Football Club, as well as staff and children who regularly attend the club, and heard first-hand about the social, health and educational benefits the service provides.
Mr Hoy also took part in a basketball challenge with Mr Armstrong, Mr Mundell and the local children who attend the club.
Speaking after the visit, Craig Hoy MSP said: “It was a pleasure to join Oliver on a visit to the Queen of the South breakfast club and to meet Dan, the team and the children who benefit from it.
“It is a massive help to the young people who attend regularly, and several of the children spoke to me about the social benefits of the club and how it helps them feel calm and settled before the school day begins. A healthy meal is so important for setting them up for the day, and the sporting activities get them going in the morning.
“Without the support of charities like Cash for Kids and the commitment shown by the football club itself, this simply wouldn’t be possible. It is hugely encouraging to see such a successful local initiative, and I will continue to press the SNP Scottish Government to ensure rural areas like Dumfriesshire receive the support they deserve, rather than being overlooked, which sadly is too often the reality.”
