Craig Hoy MSP for South Scotland has expressed “deep concern” over proposals to downgrade Hawick Fire Station and reduce its operational hours.
The move comes as the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) conducts a nationwide review of its sites. However, Mr Hoy warned that the rural nature of the Borders demands tailored protection and is calling for additional funding to prevent any downgrading of the local station.
Mr Hoy said: “This is a reckless and dangerous move. I am deeply concerned about these proposals and oppose them completely. The public would be at far greater risk if the hours of the station were to be limited. Fires and emergencies are inherently unpredictable, and having a professional team available at all times makes our communities safer.”
Mr Hoy has written to both the SFRS and the Scottish Government to outline his objections and ensure the voices of local constituents are heard.
He added: “It is little wonder the SFRS is being forced into this untenable position. The SNP Scottish Government has underfunded our emergency services for years. They must now properly fund Scotland’s essential services and save Hawick Fire Station from being downgraded.”
