South Scotland MSP Craig Hoy has challenged the Scottish Government over how responses to the consultation on a proposed national park in Dumfries and Galloway will be handled by NatureScot.
Craig raised concerns about whether the views of local residents are being properly considered.
Speaking in the chamber, Craig said: “When the minister looks at the responses to the consultation, will she impress upon Nature Scot the importance of looking at the postcodes of those who responded, so that we can tell whether or not those who live within those communities are those who are most opposed to it.”
NatureScot, which is overseeing the consultation process, is a non-departmental public body which has now compiled responses and is reporting to ministers.
The minister said she would pass Mr Hoy’s comments on to NatureScot for further consideration.
Mr Hoy recently met with residents of Scottish Land and Estates and the South West where he heard firsthand their concerns about the impact of any proposed national park.
Craig said: “There are very real concerns about both the consultation on the national park and the impact it will have. Ministers must fully take on board these concerns before damage is done to the viability of rural areas in the area.
