Local MSP Craig Hoy has paid a festive visit to Tesco in Dumfries to learn more about Tesco’s annual Winter Food Collection in collaboration with FareShare an Trussell Trust.
During the visit, Mr Hoy joined Jade McKerlie, Community Champion from Tesco Peel Centre, along with Alison Kay a volunteer at the Pantry run by the River of Life Church to recognise the launch of Tesco’s Winter Food Collection.
Speaking after the visit, Mr Hoy said: “It was great to meet Jade and the team to see first-hand the impactful work of Tesco staff and their charity partner volunteers to support the most vulnerable in our communities. I was pleased to lend a hand and encourage customers to donate items from their regular shop from pre-filled donation bags.”
As part of the initiative, customers can donate items from their regular shop using pre-filled donation bags, which are then donated to local charities.
Mr Hoy added: “It was also great to learn more about the work of dedicated volunteers like Alison from the Pantry in Dumfries and to thank them for their commitment to the community. I look forward to visiting the Pantry in the New Year to meet volunteers and see their local work first-hand”
Mr Hoy also learned about the year-round work Tesco does to generate food donations and saw the seasonal toy donation area, where shoppers are encouraged to drop in unused and boxed toys for local distribution.
During the visit Craig also learned more about Tesco’s partnership with FareShare and how they collaborate to ensure long-life food is distributed to local charities.
