South Scotland MSP Craig Hoy has raised the alarm over the slow pace of replacing outdated energy meters, warning that residents’ risk being caught out by the phased 2025 Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) switch-off.
Mr Hoy has been made aware by Ofgem that approximately 63 households across the South Scotland region will be affected by the shutdown of the RTS meter signal.
While welcoming the decision to phase the process, following pressure from Conservative MP David Mundell at Westminster, Mr Hoy is calling for urgent action to speed up installations.
Craig Hoy MSP said: “Many people still don’t know this change is needed. I want to raise awareness so residents can check if they’re affected. A phased approach is the right call, and I am pleased that the Conservative group in Westminster secured one, but that cannot be used as a reason to slow down the replacement of RTS meters.
“We need replacement meters fitted as quickly as possible to give people long-term solutions and ensure their energy supply going into the colder winter months.”
He encouraged residents in rural areas, particularly those with storage heating, to confirm with their supplier whether they have an RTS meter, and they can replace it if needed. Mr Hoy is also questioning whether the Ofgem figure is accurate given a number of constituents who have raised their own concerns.
