Local MSP Craig Hoy has met with representatives from rail operator Lumo to discuss its exciting new west coast route which will provide new connections between London and Stirling including Lockerbie.
Craig is the Scottish Conservative candidate for Dumfriesshire and was pleased to meet officials in parliament as well as recently visiting the station ahead of the introduction of the new service early next year.
Craig said: “This new service is a welcome boost for Lockerbie and the wider Dumfriesshire area. Improved rail connectivity helps local people travel more easily and can attract visitors to the area and support local businesses.
“Lockerbie is vital to the region’s transport network, and I’ll continue working to ensure it receives the investment and attention it requires, including improved accessibility, fewer cancellations and quality services that meet the demand of the community. I’ll always stand up for local rail and bus services.”
In recent years train services to Lockerbie have badly let down passengers with Craig saying the new service is “another step forward” in getting an improved rail service.
Lumo operates as an open-access rail provider, meaning it runs services without direct government subsidy and competes on the same lines as other train operators. This model allows them to offer low-cost fares with a focus on innovation.
The move could also bring skills and training opportunities.
He added: “I am a strong advocate for apprenticeships, and it was encouraging to hear Lumo is committed to apprenticeships with 95% of its current workforce starting as apprentices. This provides people from a variety of backgrounds a quality skillset in a vital industry.”
