WELL-KENT Sanquhar couple Ronnie and Shona Johnstone attended a special ceremony on Saturday to mark the opening of the Scottish Parliament.
Ahead of the ceremony MSPs were invited to nominate individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to their communities and Dumfriesshire representative Craig Hoy was proud to nominate Ronnie and Shona in recognition of the remarkable difference they have made to life in Upper Nithsdale over many years.
The ceremony was attended by King Charles and Queen Camilla and included several performances celebrating Scotland’s rich culture and heritage.
Craig Hoy MSP said: “I was delighted to welcome Ronnie and Shona Johnstone to the Scottish Parliament for the opening of the seventh session of Parliament, where they were recognised as two of Dumfriesshire's outstanding ‘local heroes ’.
“Ronnie is well known throughout the area for his involvement in the community council and Upper Nithsdale Community Trust, as well as his longstanding commitment to the Nithsdale Times, helping to preserve the stories, history and achievements of the local community through his work as editor. Shona has given countless hours to the Sanquhar Tolbooth Poppy Display, ensuring that remembrance remains at the heart of our community with an amazing 1,500 poppies being produced by local townsfolk.
“It was a pleasure to invite Ronnie and Shona to attend this special occasion alongside local heroes from every corner of Scotland and to be recognised in the presence of Their Majesties The King and Queen.
“Communities like ours are built on the commitment of people who quietly give their time and energy to support others without seeking recognition. Ronnie and Shona embody that spirit of service, and I cannot think of two more deserving recipients of this honour.
“I would like to congratulate them both on this well-deserved recognition and thank them for everything they continue to do for Sanquhar and the wider community. They are wonderful ambassadors for our area, and I was delighted to welcome them to the Scottish Parliament for this historic occasion.”
